Booklist Review
This wonderful work combines much current knowledge of materials and technology relating to hand spinning. Ross, an experienced spinner, covers the subject thoroughly with entries that discuss historical aspects of the craft; fibers such as wool, flax, and alpaca; tools such as carders, rakes, and modern spinning wheels; spinning theory and technique; and dyeing, weaving, and felting. Diagrams, photographs, charts, and graphs enhance the presentation. Appendix. JMM. 746.12 Hand spinning
Choice Review
A well-written, thorough, beautifully produced encyclopedia that covers a wide range of topics related to handspinning, including historical and cross-cultural aspects, spinnable fibers of all kinds, tools, yarn analysis, and spinning techniques. Also included is information on dying, weaving, felting, and commercial yarn processing. The entries are generally brief, from a few lines to a page in length, with useful cross-references. The many illustrations alone (black-and-white and color photographs, line drawings, graphs, tables, and electron microscope photographs) would make this volume well worth its purchase price. The appendix offers extensive charts covering sheep breeds and wools. There is no other single source that brings together so much information on this topic, although it is regrettable that the bibliography is very brief. Highly recommended for public libraries and academic libraries that support undergraduate or graduate courses in fibers or crafts. -N. Taylor, Earlham College
