London lines : the capital by underground

Kelly (The Seige, Fodor's Travel Pub., 1996) has put together a combination travelog on London and its environs and an anecdotal history of the London subway. The author has traveled the entire length of the many lines connecting London. At the many subway stations Kelly visits the villages and neighborhoods that are served by the underground and parts of London that run-of-the-mill travel guides do not cover. He takes the reader to cemeteries, ponds, old factories, mills, gardens, and schools while emphasizing those aspects that give each area its personality. The reader is also taken to standard tourist stops such as Albert Hall and Kew Gardens. Kelly's anecdotes include discussion about the stations' architecture, the problem of crime, and the advertising in subways. The map on just one page is difficult to read. This work is not a replacement for standard travel guides but an excellent complement. For public libraries with active travel sections.‘David Schau, Kanawha Cty. P.L., Charleston, W.V.
