Patrick the elephant fears lots of things; his big, strong dad seems to fear nothing. However, when a mouse from the so-called "Cheese Inspection Council" shows up at their door, Dad cowers behind the couch. Patrick welcomes the black-masked rodent inside, where it proceeds to steal their cheese--and everything in the house. The cartoon illustrations enhance character and humor in the story. Fathers aren't afraid of anythingare they? Patrick, a young elephant, is afraid "of a lot of things, like the dark, ghosts, bees, and the fluff you find under the sofa." Daddy Elephant, on the other hand, is big and strong and completely unafraid of anythingor so Patrick thinks. The truth comes out when mice appear at the house, and Daddy Elephant begins to stammer and shake. Colorful, appealing cartoon illustrations are at the forefront here, as the simple story moves somewhat bumpily along. Unperturbed and not realizing that the mice are thieves, the innocent young Patrick politely helps the small marauders as they steal the family's cheese, then the refrigerator, and then everything else, even Daddy Elephant! What's a young elephant to do? Just in time, the front door opens. It's up to Mommy Elephant to save the day and explain that everyone is afraid sometimes. Patrick still knows that Daddy Elephant is the biggest and strongest, and Daddy is proud to say that Mommy Elephant is the bravest of all. Still, the hordes of masked mice in their striped shirts making off with everything are way more fun than the feel-good message. The throngs of felonious mice make this story worth the read. Patrick, a little elephant living in a house, looks up to big, strong Daddy Elephant, who fears nothing . . . except mice. When a mouse arrives at the door and claims to be from the Cheese Inspection Council, Daddy cowers on the couch, while Patrick lets the little swindler in and watches, bemused, as he and his pals start to make off with the family's cheese, refrigerator, electronics, toys, and even the sofa where Daddy Elephant is cowering. Mommy Elephant arrives just in time to thwart the rapacious rodents' plan. High spirits and silly humor make a great combination in this brightly illustrated little drama. Small children will find it satisfying as well as funny to see a big, supposedly unflappable elephant immobilized by a cheeky little mouse, but, as Mommy Elephant reassuringly says, everyone's afraid of something.
